Feedback Thoughts

I generally like getting feedback. A lot of times I ask my friends to trade papers with me to offer and receive feedback before turning in a big assignment. I want to make myself and my work better. Sometimes I'm defensive or I get angry, especially when I disagree with the feedback. The article Using Harsh Feedback to Fuel Your Career points out that feedback is generally not a shot at your personal self and sometimes it's hard not to feel that way. People who give feedback are working to help you. It also mentions demonizing someone you disagree with and I'm definitely guilty of this, but I generally come to my senses later.

The second article I read, 8 Things to Do When You Make a Mistake focused more on reaching out for help from the university and other students. I don't do this much and try to work on my growth mindset instead of reaching out. I have gotten better about talking to other students for feedback and advice on how to study better. I guess this is sort of building my support network, but I still live at home so I have my family to support me as well. My parents are a great sounding board when I'm stressed about something.
I got a lot of feedback in Myth and Folklore last semester and sometimes it was hard to hear what people had to say. I'd be kind of angry reading the comments, but later, when I was rewriting stories, their suggestions helped a lot to make my stories and writing better. I noticed that I always felt a little less hostile when a commenter made an effort to point out good things too, especially at the end of their comment. I'd finish reading it and feel okay about my story even if they ripped it to shreds in the first 2/3 of their feedback.
